Garage Floor Mats and Duty Free Shopping in Giant Hangars

First tax then duty free?

Coming off a flight at Brisbane airport recently I noticed that they had made an attempt at expanding the airport. A concourse with a moving walkway has been installed at some of the far gates and an expansion of the arrival duty free shops to name a few. For those of you who didn’t know it, you can actually buy duty free on the way in, and on the way out of Australia; the other one is at departures. So what’s this got to do with garage door mats you may ask?

Aircraft Garages-and garage floor mats

Strolling along the carpeted mat walkways towards duty free just before immigration, gives you a good view of the planes, cranes and their garages. These huge birds line up to either fly out of Australia or get stowed in one of hundreds of garages (in airport language; hangars) in the airport.  Some of these hangars are absolutely huge with enormous automatic sliding doors operated by very powerful equipment. Rather like garage doors only most of these don’t tilt upwards they slide into divisions of panels called leaves. To give you a rough idea of the size of these doors, on average they span 200 meters wide and are about 50 meters high, which should be large enough for a plane like the A380 to fit into: A380-800 - Wing span 79.8m (261ft 10in), length 72,75m (238ft 8in). Height 24, 08 m (79ft). Which incidentally flies into Brisbane International for the first time on February 2nd, 2009?   One of the main problems with hangar garage design is noise limitation. When an A380 or higher sales in to a plane garage one night, the noise and vibration of the aircraft could be enough to literally blow the roof off! Which is why, they are also specifically designed for noise limitation. Another way of limiting aircraft noise in a hangar is to lay insulation mats rather like the ones used in garages. Mats like these are so designed to not only help with plane parking but also to reduce the amount of resonant noise from the aircraft.  They also help to protect the flooring of the hangar where sealing at the doors can also limit the amount of debris and dust that may blow in from the outside.  Strolling into the new duty free shop I noticed they could do with a few mats themselves. Some the floor tiles were already cracked and stained with aid of the nasty trolley carts and old boots.  I queued up at the register to buy myself a bottle of Gentleman Jack. The monitors glared out at me with an ad claiming competitive rates, they mean competitive surely?-They could do with a new spellchecker too perhaps. On the subject of competitive prices, garage floor mats for garages and even small hangars are available at companies like garageaccessories. Seeing all those aircraft, the maintenance crews and the huge hangers, made me want to get back to my garage and give it good seeing to. That is, laying some of these protective garage floor mats and the like.
